Parents and other adults probably knew little of the actual goings-on there. Their oldest son Thomas went to boarding schools in France and England, describing these places as destructive prison-like environments. His artist father came from New Zealand, but moved around with his American wife from various places in Europe to the US. Thomas Merton (1915-68) had a complex background. Both his autobiography as well as his other books were widely read, and it has been said that young people flocked to Catholic orders as a result of reading him. Trappist monk Merton strongly influenced the youth generations of the 1950s and -60s. ![]() I have just read Thomas Merton’s autobiography, first published in 1948, now finally in Norwegian. ![]()
